Anyone driving up Little River Road recently will have seen the activity underway on the lane leading in to the soccer field and behind the eastlink Wild Blueberry Centre.
Last month, Oxford Town Council agreed to a proposal from the Centre’s board to pave the lane and create additional parking spaces behind the facility โ at no cost to taxpayers. The town will be responsible for ongoing maintenance of the lane from this point forward. The proposal addressed two needs: improving parking availability for users of the new community centre and the soccer fields, while also officially naming the lane, which fixes a problem with emergency services: were there to be a medical issue on the soccer field or the OREC school field, first responders who weren’t familiar with the area couldn’t find that area on a map. With the lane now being added to the civic addressing system, “eastlink Centre Lane” should begin to show up on the various mapping tools used by ambulances, fire, EMO and the public.

Speaking of paving, Oxford’s Public Works crew will be out patching potholes starting early Tuesday morning on Birchwood Road, Powell Street, Waverley Street, and Crescent Avenue. Birchwood Road may have a detour in place as work progresses. Traffic control will be on-site, and motorists are asked to drive with caution in those areas.
he Oxford Volunteer Fire Department is hosting the Nazarene Youth Group on Wednesday evening, October 21st, from 6:30pm-7:30pm. Fire Chief Bruce Rushton says the group will tour the trucks and equipment, with tables set up to demonstrate the tools firefighters use as well as some spare firefighter gear to try on. More than 20 youth are expected to attend. Rushton says this will be “…a great opportunity for folks in the community to see us in a different way, than at a fire or accident…. as well as show them the pride we have in what we do.”

If you are in the neighbourhood of the Oxford Fire Department, don’t forget to pick up your tickets for the Oxford Firefighters Association Christmas Cash Draw, with cash prizes and draws daily through the month of December. Tickets are $25/each and support your local volunteer fire department.
