Our Oxford History

Masthead of The Oxford Journal, 1963

For folks of a certain age, The Oxford Journal is a memory that gives nostalgia some real weight. The local newspaper in Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada, launched on 22 June 1898, running until 18 March 2016. For all but the early years of its 118-year existence, The Oxford Journal was a labour of love for the Marchand family and the employees who delivered a weekly publication.

As we are able, we intend to offer content on Hello Oxford drawn from the archives of The Oxford Journal, particularly when a snippet from history is related to contemporary issues.

“There’s gold in them thar hills!” — this is how we see the 118-year publication record of The Oxford Journal. So many stories, events, and mentions of folks who were our family members, our neighbours… There’s a thrill that comes from finding even the smallest of stories involving people we knew, or wish we knew. In cooperation with the Oxford Historical Society, we’ll bring this community’s history onto the page for you to relive.
