Eric Mosher and contractor Jeff Wood (A-1 Gutters) watch the demolition of the former Fowler barbershop on Water Street this morning. Greg Mattinson Excavating handled the teardown.
It was slow going (and very chilly), as the crew worked to preserve one wall (facing the GJDE building alley) and part of the front floor.
Over the years, this building housed Fowler’s barbershop, a Sears catalogue outlet, a laundromat, a grocery, and undoubtedly other small businesses.
Mosher will rebuild on the site, with a new building pretty much with the same style, and plans to open a bistro-style restaurant on the right side, with outdoor seating in the alley. The left side of the building will house a garden supply shop. Eventually Mosher hopes to have a farmer’s market operating around the back of the property as well.
UPDATE: In the end, all they could save was a portion of the north side wall, which had been replaced several years ago. At least there’s a clean foundation for the upcoming build…
